Investec Australia

Specialist Australian banking with an international perspective

In 1974 three young entrepreneurs set up a small financing business for medical and dental professionals in Johannesburg. Three decades on, Investec Group is an international banking and asset management business with branches in 14 countries.

Investec Group established its first Australian branch in Sydney in 1997. In the years since we've grown organically and by acquisition. Today, we have offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Our clients include:

  • HNW Individuals
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Medical, dental and accounting professionals
  • Businesses
  • Corporations
  • Financial Institutions

We're a relatively young business. We like to do things differently. We encourage fresh thinking and entrepreneurial initiative.

We've grown by building well-defined specialist banking services. We focus on niche areas where we can compete effectively and where our distinctive approach adds value for clients.

Strategic acquisitions over the past decade include private equity specialist Wentworth Associates in 2001 and the Australian banking operations of NM Rothschild & Sons Australia Ltd in 2006. In 2007, recollecting the group's origins, we acquired Experien Pty Ltd, a specialist lender to medical and accounting professionals.

The creation of the Investec Property Opportunity Fund in 2007 enhanced the platform for property investments in Australia. The Investec Global Aircraft Fund ("IGAF") successfully launched in early 2008, and in early 2009 commenced a second capital raising. In early 2011 IGAF’s portfolio of aircraft has grown to a value of over A$1 billion.

Growth in servicing the corporate and institutional market followed in early 2010 with the acquisition of an institutional stock broking team to form Investec Securities, which subsequently obtained an ASX market participant licence to provide institutional equities research, sales and trading, and equity capital markets solutions focusing on resources. In 2011 IBAL expanded its capability in structured transactions across the energy, aircraft and resources industries, hiring a new team of infrastructure experts from ALBA Capital Partners. IBAL employs approximately 400 staff in Australia as at March 2011, and has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
